What is a museum, if not the sum of many acts of generosity—and of care? To collect art is to invest deeply in the life of objects, ideas, and people. It is a process built over time through curiosity, trust, and a willingness to share. At The Gund, we believe that a collection is not just a record of what we value, but a living expression of how we care: for artists, for one another, and for the communities we serve.
This exhibition marks a milestone in the life of The Gund, as we celebrate an extraordinary gift from collectors David Horvitz ’74 and Francie Bishop Good. Over the coming years, their transformative donation of 75 works of art will become part of our permanent collection. Their seminal collection—visionary in its embrace of women artists across backgrounds and disciplines—will have a lasting impact on the work we do here, shaping how we teach, learn, and connect through art.
On view are selected promised gifts from the Horvitz-Bishop Good Family Collection alongside recent acquisitions and other significant contributions, including two works by Naudline Pierre, gifted by Renée Peck ’75 and Stewart Peck ’74. These additions reflect not only the breadth of our growing collection but also the generosity and intentionality behind it.
Since 2021, we have committed to always having works from the collection on view—foregrounding connection, reflection, and discovery. Every object displayed is an invitation to feel something, to return to it with new questions, to see it anew. Collections grow through relationships. The trust placed in us by collectors, artists, alumni, and friends of the museum enables The Gund to be a resource for everyone who appreciates art at Kenyon College and far beyond. With this latest chapter, we celebrate not only the art itself, but the care and conviction that bring it here.
We invite you to explore, to wonder, and to feel. After all, what distinguishes a museum is not just what it holds—but how we hold it, together. To all involved—our donors, our visitors, and our wider community—we extend our deepest gratitude for the many acts of care we generate together.
