"Cumsee", Gullah for “come see,” presents a selection of paintings by Sam Doyle (1906–1985), one of the most important self-taught artists of the 20th century. His expressive visual history of African American accomplishments, St. Helena Island’s characters and everyday life astutely documents Gullah culture from an insider’s point of view. Doyle’s work has been widely appreciated and sought by museums, collectors, and fellow 20th-century artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Edward Ruscha.
