The session will begin with participants listening to field recordings Brian has made in Knox County, followed by an opportunity to discuss their responses to the sounds in connection to place.
Brian will then conduct a group exercise in which participants "listen" to an artifact of local history. He is researching an archive of Mount Vernon newspapers from the Civil War era at the Mount Vernon Public Library, and would carefully choose an article that would serve as a medium to enter into a historical moment. The listening session will unfold according to a structured method. For example, he will offer a series of prompts, invite participants to read selections, and open a conversation about what they hear through the article, and what sort of soundscape it allows them to imagine.
Lastly, Brian will take participants on a sound walk through Mount Vernon, enabling them to connect with a familiar place with heightened senses, and an understanding of how to take part in a process of listening that helps them reach a new understanding about place and history.
