Sympathy for the Translator investigates the politics of translation through an array of works and practices that touch upon identity, cultural memory, notions of intimacy, and issues of visibility. Viewers are prompted to consider the role of translation as a means of exploration and disruption while feeling a sense of care for others, their languages, histories, and oral traditions. Sympathy for the Translator plays on the idea that artists are translators of identity and cultural memory, and the works selected for this exhibition call into question the limitations of languages and the inherent singularities embedded in tongues.

Daisy Desrosiers is joined by artists Jesse Chun and Azza El Siddique, discussing translation (across languages, membranes) in times of isolation, opacity, and hegemony. The conversation is moderated by Yasi Alipour of The Brooklyn Rail.
